Programs & Curriculum

Group Leaders and Assistants plan and develop their programs according to the needs of the children in their care, as determined by written observation as well as consultation with the child’s family and the Director. Activities are designed to promote social, emotional, physical and intellectual development.

The program and room routines are displayed on each room’s notice-board and parents are encouraged to check these to gain information regarding their child’s play. Group Leaders welcome your feedback on their programs as well as any information, ideas and resources that you may be able to provide.

Daily routines will include indoor and outdoor play (weather permitting), meals and rest time as well as opportunities for solitary and group play and individual interaction with adults. The children will also participate in literacy and creative activities eg… stories, finger plays and a variety of art and craft activities.

We encourage children to explore their environment, make choices with their activities and take responsibility for their choices.

An essential part of every program is evaluation. Observational records are kept on each child to monitor his or her progress and development and provide the basis for future program development. These records are available only to the parents, the Group Leader and in limited circumstances to representatives from The Office for Early Childhood, Education and Care to ensure Childcare Regulations are being adhered to as well as the National Accreditation Council. Parents are encouraged to discuss their child’s progress with the Group Leader or Director at a time that is mutually convenient.

Twice a year there are Parent Evenings held so that parents whose children have moved rooms or are new to the Centre, may learn more about their child’s room and its program and routines.

Developmental records are kept on all children. Parents receive constant verbal and written feedback on their childs progress. The Parents of children in the Koala room who are leaving to go to school will be given a written progress report upon their child ending their enrolment at the Centre.

The Early Years Learning Framework

The Early Years Learning Framework describes the principles, practice and outcomes essential to support and enhance young children’s learning from birth to five years of age, as well as their transition to school. The Framework has a strong emphasis on play-based learning as play is the best vehicle for your child’s learning and provides the most appropriate stimulus for brain development. The Framework also recognises the importance of communication and language (including early literacy and numeracy) and social and emotional development. The staff at Koala Lou are currently implementing the Early Years Learning Framework.
